14th Annual – National Week of Action Against School Pushout

14th Annual – National Week of Action Against School Pushout
October 14 (Saturday) to October 22 (Sunday), 2023
Theme: Education, Liberation, Elevate!

#DSCWoA2023 #EducateLiberateElevate

‘Educate, Liberate, Elevate!’ is the call for students, parents and organizers across the country during DSC’s 2023 National Week of Action Against School Pushout

From October 14th-22nd, grassroots organizers, student and parent groups, education advocates and many others  join members of the Dignity in Schools Campaign (DSC), for their 14th National Week of Action Against School Pushout. As a part of their annual mass education campaign to raise awareness and inspire collective action against the devastating and ongoing impacts of school policing and zero-tolerance discipline practices, the DSC supports and co-coordinates events, teach-ins, rallies, protests and workshops across the county.

This year’s theme, ‘Educate, Liberate, Elevate!’ amplifies the reality that students flourish when a foundation of culturally responsive, caring adults in schools who can meet students’ is established. Students need and deserve learning environments with skilled staff who can work with students to prevent, and process and respond to challenges while fostering positive and relevant learning environments. Inflicting physical harm through corporal punishment is legal in 17 states with the state of  Mississippi leading the nation in recorded incidences for the 2017-18 school year.

The Dignity in Schools Campaign has consistently advocated for removing police and police-like agents from school buildings. Police do not contribute to school safety, just as corporal punishment does not contribute to students feeling safe, secure and supported. The two practices are intricately connected. The eradication of both is central to a strategy that actually empowers young learners to thrive.

DSC’s particular focus this year is on supporting organizing efforts to institute policies to ban and/or outlaw the use of corporal punishment in public schools as well as implement policies and practices that create safe and nurturing school environments for students and school personnel.

On October 19th, DSC-National will be in Jackson, MS supporting the work of the Mississippi members in their campaign to end corporal punishment — the punitive, violent and legally sanctioned act of hitting children in public schools to manage behavior. Community members will attend the State Board of Education meeting and host a rally and press conference near the State Capitol followed by a “Educate, Liberate, Elevate!” community convening at the historic Smith Robertson Museum.
