Oct 15-23, 2016 – National Week of Action Against School Pushout

Oct 15-23, 2016 – National Week of Action Against School Pushout

Save the Kids again is joining Dignity in Schools and 100s of other organizations in asking our volunteers, chapters and friends to take the streets and do at least one action (teach-in, lecture, workshop, conference, tabling, rally, protest, march/roll, film screening, sit-in, walkout, and protest) to work to end SROs, punitive discipline, suspension, detention, physical punishment, and policing and surveillance at schools.

During this year’s DSC Week of Action, over 100 organizations in more than 50 cities across the country will hold rallies, marches, forums and workshops to raise awareness to #EndSchoolPushout and to launch and support local campaigns to transform and #RethinkDiscipline. This year’s theme is: Lift Us Up! Don’t Push Us Out and the week’s main hashtag is #DSCWoA2016.

Our National Week of Action Demands

This year DSC members and allies will call on the federal government, states, districts and schools to:

  1. Shift funding from school police to counselors, peace builders and positive discipline.
  2. Fund and use transformative and restorative justice, mediation and positive interventions.
  3. Stop arresting and pushing out students of color, LGBTQ youth, students that are homeless, and students with disabilities at higher rates. (Black students are pushed out at the highest rates nationally.)
  4. Make sure states and districts focus on school climate under the new federal law – the Every Student Succeeds Act.
  5. End paddling and physical punishment in all schools.
